What to bring (Individuals & Businesses)

Use this list to gather what you can before your appointment. Don’t worry if you don’t have everything — bring what you have and we’ll help you identify what’s missing.

Individuals: Common Documents

Most people won’t have all of these — this is a “menu” of what may apply.

Identity & Basics

  • Government-issued photo ID (driver’s license/passport)
  • Social Security numbers / ITINs for you, spouse, dependents
  • Date of birth for dependents
  • Prior-year tax return (helpful if available)
  • Bank account & routing number (for direct deposit/payment)

Income

  • W-2s (jobs)
  • 1099-NEC / 1099-MISC (contract work)
  • 1099-G (unemployment/refunds)
  • 1099-INT / 1099-DIV (interest/dividends)
  • 1099-R (retirement distributions)
  • SSA-1099 (Social Security)
  • K-1s (partnerships/S-Corps/trusts)
  • Other income documentation (prizes, settlements, etc.)

Deductions & Credits

  • Childcare expenses (provider name, EIN/SSN, amounts)
  • Education forms: 1098-T + tuition/expense receipts
  • Student loan interest: 1098-E
  • Mortgage interest: 1098 + property tax amounts
  • Charitable donations (cash + non-cash)
  • Medical expenses (if itemizing)
  • Retirement contributions (IRA, HSA forms)

Home & Property

  • Property tax statements
  • Sale of home: closing statement (HUD-1/Closing Disclosure)
  • Energy credits: receipts for qualifying improvements
  • Home office details (if self-employed): square footage & costs

Investments & Crypto

  • Brokerage statements: 1099-B / consolidated 1099
  • Cost basis information (if not included)
  • Crypto transaction history (buys/sells/transfers)
  • Capital loss carryover (prior-year return)

Health Coverage

  • 1095-A (Marketplace insurance) + Form 8962 details
  • HSA contributions/distributions: 5498-SA / 1099-SA
  • Employer coverage forms (if applicable)

Business Basics

  • Legal business name, address, and EIN (or SSN for sole prop)
  • Entity type (sole prop, LLC, S-Corp, partnership)
  • Prior-year business return (if available)
  • Ownership details (partners/shareholders %)
  • State registration info (if applicable)

Income Records

  • Profit & Loss statement (income/expenses by category)
  • Sales reports (POS, Stripe, Square, Shopify, etc.)
  • 1099-K / 1099-NEC received
  • Other income documentation (refunds, grants, etc.)
  • Bank statements (if no P&L available)

Expense Records

  • Business expenses by category (receipts or summaries)
  • Software/subscriptions
  • Supplies, materials, inventory purchases
  • Advertising/marketing
  • Business insurance
  • Professional fees (legal/accounting)
  • Rent/lease and utilities

Payroll & Contractors

  • Payroll reports (if you have employees)
  • W-2 / W-3 copies (if issued)
  • Contractor payments list (name, address, amount)
  • 1099-NEC filings (if issued)
  • Payroll tax filings (quarterly/annual)

Assets, Vehicle, & Equipment

  • Equipment/vehicle purchase details (date, cost, use %)
  • Depreciation schedules (if available)
  • Mileage log (business miles) and total miles
  • Home office costs (if applicable)
  • Loan/lease statements for business assets

Tax Payments & Other Items

  • Estimated tax payments (dates/amounts)
  • Sales tax filings (if applicable)
  • Business licenses/fees
  • PPP/EIDL or other loan documents (if applicable)
  • 1099-INT for business accounts

Timeline

  • Gather forms as they arrive (Jan–Mar)
  • Upload as you receive them (no need to wait)
  • Flag anything “unusual” (new job, sale, new business)

Organization Tips

  • Keep a note of major life changes
